Introduction

Welcome to Learning Copyright. This is a learning object that uses a non-traditional navigation system for effective learning. This is a final project for Digital Rhetoric (WRA 415) and Design for Online Learning (TC 848) at Michigan State University (Fall 2004). Go to the Learning Object or see the theory and design issues behind the project.

The topic I've chosen is Copyright/ Intellectual property. I got really interested in this topic during the Digital Rhetoric class. One major driving force is that Copyright transcends into the realm of morality and philosophy, especially the concepts of Private property, Capitalism and Communism. I thought that this would be a good way to learn more about this topic.

This is not a research project (in terms of content) and I have not attempted to come up with new findings of my own. My aim is rather to present existing ideas in my own words (and form). I have used some direct quotes and it is my firm belief that they fall under the Fair Use clause. I would like to especially thank Danielle Nicole Devoss from whom I drew the thread to my content as well as parts of the content itself.

This project is being built in layers/ levels. What it means is that this project will be continued to be developed over the next semester, but the present version by itself is fully funtional. Feel free to report any bugs to me.

Technical Specifications

Best viewed in 1024 X 768 or more. I hope to bring this down to 800 X 600 in the next version.

How to use this learning object?

The learning object uses the concept of "meta-navigation", wherin the user can create his/her navigation depending upon their needs. The user can view the information in three dimensions: Module, Issue and Media.

Say you want to view the content in Module I (Introduction), click on it and the navigation will appear on the left of the screen. Now if you want to see topics within introduction that relate to music, click on Media II (Audio/ Music). Assume another situation where the user wants to see topics that relate to modifying music. Clear the Module selection (by clicking on the bottom of that pane) and click on Issue II (Modify) and Media II (Audio/ Music). This will give the required response.

Critical Issues

There is one important usability issue that I have not been able to resolve (due to the way in which I've used the Srollpane component). When the user clicks on a Module/ Issue/ Dimension, there is no feedback as to which one is selected. I realize that this is an important issue, but I've not been able to get over this despite repeated efforts. I'll try to fix this as soon as possible.

Most of the content in this version is still in the draft stage. All modules are currently not included and parts of the content maybe incomplete and/ or placeholders may have been used. The aim of this version is to demonstrate the main features of the project.
