Urban youth may prefer hip-hop to Shakespeare, but Ernest Morrell thinks both will help improve their academic skills. His study of high school classes that compared classic literary works with rap lyrics showed that students learned to analyze themes, point of view, and other literary devices in both genres. Using popular culture in their classes can help educators reach marginalized youth, he concludes.
